Police force entry into the left-wing compound in Berlin ahead of fire inspection
Berlin riot police eventually force entry into the Rigaer 94 squat in the Friedrichshain area of the city on June 17. The squat is notorious for its militancy and was recently the scene of intense riots over the issue of a security zone being erected around the squat to allow safe passage of a fire inspection.
Residents attempted to make a deal that allowed the inspector inside without a police escort, however, this was rejected and minutes later police with power tools could be seen attempting to gain entry.
Police came under attack from paint and fire extinguishers as they opened the door to the squat. After hours of police cutting through makeshift barricades inside and deeming it safe, the inspector was brought inside under intense police escort.
The verdict of the inspection is not yet known.
